Professionals + City Youth = Hope
Syracuse, NY - November
28,
2007,
Green & Seifter, Certified Public
Accountants, PLLC closed the office for the afternoon
to host a volunteer event at the Museum of Science & Technology.
Firm employees teamed up with 42 students from
the City of Syracuse School District to take
part
in “Math
Challenge 2007.” The students ranged
in age
from 13 to 17.
The students were given math problems to complete which were associated with the Museum displays, some of which were K’nex. Each accountant took 2 or 3 students under their wing and enjoyed solving problems together such as “determining the angular velocity of a double swing amusement park ride” and “determining how far a light year is.”
The students then had a chance to visit the rest of the museum and were excited to create their own K’nex piece to take home.
The
second half of the program consisted of a pizza
party for the students and a presentation by Gary
Grossman, Co-Managing Partner, about the importance
of math and its role not only in the accounting profession,
but in every day problem solving.
“We feel strongly about giving back to the community
and are pleased to be able to participate in an event
that will have a positive impact on the kids”,
said Gary Grossman, Co-managing Partner at Green & Seifter
CPAs.
The
day ended with an awards ceremony where each student
received a certificate of accomplishment and a backpack
containing prizes. The Firm then presented donations
to the Vision Center consisting of educational games,
books, bean bags and throw pillows. Each student
was a winner!
“I think this was a great opportunity for our kids to network and work
with local professionals in a fun setting. Partnerships like this are essential
to finding innovative ways to educate our young people and ensure a brighter
future for our kids and Central New York,” said LaToya Sawyer, Administrative
Coordinator at Mercy Works Vision Center.
The event took place in conjunction with Mercy Works Vision Center and was unique
in that it was the first time ever to take place. The MOST provided the facility
for the event, and Bobbi Alcock, Education Director, designed the Math problems.
