Catch the Game Show Craze!

Syracuse, NY - January 28, 2006 - How do we prevent losing talented young students to communities outside Upstate New York? How can we retain the best and the brightest students? There are no easy answers to these questions. We at Green & Seifter CPAs have come up with an innovative way to bring college students together with professionals giving the students an opportunity to network and make connections with business leaders, in some cases, lasting ones.

The event is the 5th Annual Green & Seifter Accounting Challenge, held at the Le Moyne College Performing Arts Center on February 3, 2006. The Accounting Challenge begins with a social hour from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., which allows everyone to mingle and get to know each other. The game begins at 7:30 and ends at 9:00 p.m. The Accounting Challenge is a Jeopardy™ style game formatted to incorporate accounting questions and answers. The four participating colleges are: Le Moyne College, St. John Fisher College, SUNY Oswego and Ithaca College.

Each college sends a team of eight students and competes for a trophy as well as Portable DVD Players (Palm Pilots in previous years), which are awarded to each player on the winning team. We have also extended invitations to local high schools as well as to students who participate with an organization called Career Opportunities in the Accounting Profession. Our impressive list of judges includes:

  • Robert H. Colson, CPA, PhD, Grant Thornton, LLC
  • Mary-Jo Kranacher, MBA, CPA, CFE, Editor-in-Chief of The CPA Journal, the official publication of the New York State Society of CPAs.
  • Mark T. Park, Special Agent, Federal Bureau of Investigation

High School Students

High school students who may be faced with decisions relating to careers and college choices are welcome to attend. This could be a valuable experience for them as they observe college students at their best, while having fun. The college students prepare a 5 minute power point presentation about themselves and their school. High school kids will also have an opportunity to meet the college students, their professors, accounting professionals and the prestigious judges.

An example of a typical question (aside from the trivia board) is as follows:

Answer (for $100): Beginning Inventory + Goods Purchased – Ending Inventory would equal this.

Question: What is cost of goods sold?
