Planning for Long Term Care
by Steven J. Dippolito, CPA, MBA

Syracuse, NY - 2006 -It's a subject most of us put off or ignore. Thinking about care for a loved one such as a parent or child or ourselves is not something any of us like to face. Yet it's important and sometimes critical.

Some basic facts:

Every individual over 18 years of age should have a living will and health care proxy.

Medicare and Medicaid eligibility and coverage is changing and becoming more complicated and restrictive.

Long term care insurance is appropriate for some and not others.

Medicare pays for medical care for short periods of time in a skilled care facility. It does not cover custodial care (daily living assistance), including home care.

Medicaid, for those who financially qualify, currently covers custodial care in skilled nursing facilities and some assisted living programs. Although Medicaid is theoretically available for home care, the actual available home care in your area is likely to be limited.

Generally, people are living longer and receiving better medical care. As a result, long term care, and the cost thereof, has become a much bigger issue to individuals and families. Take the time today to make an appointment with your loved ones to discuss your and their wishes so that you are legally and financially prepared for an unfortunate situation. At Green & Seifter CPAs we have a team of people who can help put your wishes in place. It is a subject you cannot ignore.
